Overview

Most behavioral health professionals believe they practice person-centered care. But what happens when the person doesn’t want what you think is best for them?

What happens when they miss appointments, reject recommendations, seem unmotivated, or enter treatment because someone else told them they had to?

Do we become more directive? Label them as resistant? Focus on compliance?

Or do we become curious about what their behavior might actually be telling us?

Operationalizing Person Centered Behavioral Health Practice moves person-centered care beyond philosophy and into the everyday decisions, conversations, and relationships that shape a person’s experience of behavioral health services. Learners explore what it actually looks like to share power, support autonomy, understand ambivalence, and respect the individual as the expert on their own life while still bringing professional knowledge, clinical judgment, and appropriate structure to the relationship.

The course develops practical communication skills using principles from motivational interviewing, including open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, summarizing, and recognizing change talk. But the goal is not simply to learn another communication technique. It is to understand how the way we communicate can either strengthen a person’s motivation and sense of control or unintentionally create resistance.
